Technical consulting for artisanal fisheries

Samaki Consultores supports fishing unions, fisher associations and coves along Chile's North-Central coast with the management of their benthic resource areas (AMERB), the design of productive projects and applications to public funding.

What we do

  • Assessment of the organization and its benthic resources (sea urchin, loco, macroalgae).
  • Technical support for management plans in benthic resource management areas (AMERB).
  • Design of productive diversification projects: restocking, seaweed farming and small-scale aquaculture.
  • Preparation of applications to public funds for artisanal fisheries (e.g. INDESPA programs or the Law 20,925 seaweed restocking and farming bonus).
  • Governance design: roles, internal rules and fair benefit-sharing among members.
  • Support for fishing infrastructure projects with municipalities and the Ministry of Public Works (MOP).

Why it matters

AMERBs grant artisanal fishing organizations exclusive rights over benthic resources in a defined stretch of coast, in exchange for following a management plan approved by Chile's Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) and submitting regular monitoring reports.

A well-designed management plan helps increase the biomass of the main species, organize harvests and open the door to complementary activities such as restocking or seaweed farming inside the area.

How we work

  • 1. Kick-off meeting with the board to understand the area, resources and goals.
  • 2. Field survey and review of existing records (resolutions, previous reports, landings).
  • 3. Technical and budget proposal with prioritized options.
  • 4. Support during implementation, funding applications and monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with small fishing unions?

Yes. We work with organizations of every size and adapt the scope to their resources and goals. Often the first step is a focused assessment.

What public funding is available for artisanal fisheries in Chile?

The main agency running competitive funds for artisanal fisheries and small-scale aquaculture is INDESPA (created by Law 21,069), which also runs the Law 20,925 bonus for seaweed restocking and farming. Regional and municipal funds are also available. We review the current terms for each case.

Where do you work?

Mainly along the coast of the Coquimbo, Atacama and Valparaíso regions, from our base in Caleta Puerto Manso (Canela).
