Benthic restocking: red sea urchin and loco

We design restocking projects for benthic resources —such as red sea urchin (Loxechinus albus) and loco (Concholepas concholepas)— for artisanal fisher organizations, integrated into their management plans and, where useful, combined with seaweed farms that provide food and shelter.

What's included

  • Assessment of the resource and habitat in the area.
  • Selection of sites, densities and seeding seasons.
  • Coordination with seed production (hatchery) when needed.
  • Survival and growth monitoring protocols.
  • Integration with macroalgae for food and shelter.
  • Support with public funding applications.

Restocking + macroalgae: an integrated model

In Los Vilos Bay we designed a project that combines suspended Macrocystis pyrifera farming with red sea-urchin restocking. The kelp provides food and shelter, and the organization gains two production lines in the same area.

Frequently asked questions

Which resources can be restocked?

On Chile's North-Central coast the most common are red sea urchin, loco and brown macroalgae. The choice depends on the area and on what its management plan authorizes.

How long until restocking results show?

It depends on the species and site; several seasons of monitoring are usually needed. That's why we define survival and growth indicators from the start.
